This report by the Center for American Progress is an example of using actual data but describing them in an inflammatory and misleading manner. For example, it correctly states that for those under age 26 the number of deaths due to firearms has been cut almost in half since 1994. Yet it also states “There is a crisis of youth gun violence in this country”. In addition, it claims that “YOUNG PEOPLE ARE AT AN INCREASED RISK OF GUN VIOLENCE”. This is true if one is comparing 15 to 24 year old individuals with those older than 24. But it isn’t true when comparing those under 14 to those 15 to 24 and it isn’t true that those age 15 to 24 are facing an increased risk over time.
